Distribution meetings set for hearing loss equipment

     Pre-registration is underway for group meetings at the Hampton B. Allen Library, 120 S. Greene St., Wadesboro, that will determine eligibility and provide assistance with an application for hearing loss equipment.
     The program is available for low income North Carolinians who are deaf, hard of hearing, those with vision and hearing loss, or with a speech impairment -- and includes either an amplified telephone or a hearing aid. The service is free.
     To register for the upcoming information sessions, call the Charlotte Regional Center of the N.C. Division of Services for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing at 704.568.8558 or toll-free at 800.835.5302. Those who register for the session will be given more details, including a list of documents needed to provide eligibility for the program.

Dixie Youth baseball, softball registration underway

     The Anson County Parks and Recreation Department will conduct registration for Dixie Youth baseball and Dixie Youth girls softball Jan. 25 through Feb. 26.
     Dixie Youth baseball is for ages 9-12 (age is determined by May 1, 2010); and girls softball is for ages 4-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-15 and 16-18 (age is determined by Jan. 1, 2010.

AAYA sets sign-up dates at Field of Dreams

     The Anson Athletic Youth Association (AAYA) has set sign-up dates for T-ball, Machine Pitch, Minors, Majors, Babe Ruth and Girls Softball.
     On-site registration at the Field of Dreams in Polkton will be held from noon until 2 p.m. on Feb. 6 and Feb. 13; from 6:00-7:30 p.m. on Feb. 11 and Feb. 18; and from 10:00 a.m. until noon on Feb. 20.
     The cost for T-ball participants is $35; for all other categories, the cost is $55. Cash, check or credit card will be accepted (there is a $3.38 service fee for credit card payments).
     Baseball and softball categories and ages include: T-ball, ages 4-6; Machine Pitch, 7-8; Minors, 9-10; Majors, 11-12; Babe Ruth, 13-16; Girls Softball, 8-and-under, 10-and-under, and 12-and-under.

SPCC to begin the FastTrac LaunchPad program

     South Piedmont Community College will begin instruction in the FastTrac LaunchPad program on Monday, Feb. 15, at the Wadesboro campus, 514 N. Washington St., Wadesboro. The course will be held from 1:00-4:00 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays through March 24.
     The course will be taught at the Monroe Campus, Old Charlotte Road, from 4:00-7:00, beginning Feb. 15 and ending on March 24.
     The program is a practical, hands-on business development class designed to help aspiring entrepreneurs hone the skills needed to create, grow and manage a successful business. The six-week course will help students to embrace the entrepreneurial spirit and take the first giant step toward achieving a personal dream -- even in the toughest economic conditions.
     Qualified dislocated or unemployed workers may be eligible to receive a scholarship for this course.

Donations sought for Prom Night 2010 dresses

     "Please help us make Prom Night, a special night for so many young people, happen for our young ladies," asks Nichole Cox, a Prom Night coordinator. "We are asking for gently worn dresses or monetary donations to give as many girls as possible the chance to attend the Spring 2010 Anson High School Prom Night in style."

     Hampton B. HOLLA!-sponsored '100 Reasons to Achieve' project begins

     HOLLA! (Helping Our Loved ones Learn and Achieve) has announced guidelines for the "100 Reasons to Achieve" project. Qualifiers from Anson Middle School, Anson High School, Anson County Early College, Anson Challenge Academy, Anson New Tech High School and STEM will be eligible for a $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond that will be presented to the essay contest winner.
     An essay contest winner will be recognized on Saturday, Feb. 6, during the HOLLA!/Hampton B. Allen Literary Festival in the library's Little Theater.
     The remainder of the program will end on May 26. Students who attend class and have not chosen a Step 4 from the beginning to the end of each nine-week period will qualify to receive HOLLA! awards -- that may be in the form of cash, certificates or other incentives.

Free tax preparation, e-filing offered

     New Ventures Business Development Inc., located in South Piedmont Community College's Lockhart-Taylor Center, 514 N. Washington St., Wadesboro, is offering free tax preparation and e-filing.
     Certified tax preparers will be available to assist with tax preparation from 6:00-9:00 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. To make an appointment, call 704.272.5457.
     Documents needed to file 2009 tax forms include: a valid driver's license or state-issued I.D.; Social Security cards and birth dates for all individuals on the tax return; wage and earnings statements from all employers (W-2, W-2G and Form 1099); interest and dividend statements from banks (Form 1099); Tax Year 2008 federal and state returns (if available); Tax Year 2009 tax package (if received); other revelent information about income and expenses; all receipts (if itemizing deductions); and banking documents (for direct deposit of refund).

Pre-K, kindergarten registration dates announced

     The Anson County School System has announced the following dates for pre-K and kindergarten registration:

  • Ansonville Elementary -- 9:00-11:00 a.m., March 5 (for pre-K and kindergarten)

  • Morven Elementary -- 9:00-11:00 a.m., March 12 (for pre-K and kindergarten)

  • Peachland-Polkton Elementary -- 9:00-11:00 a.m., March 29 (kindergarten only)

  • Wadesboro Primary -- 9:00-11:00 a.m., April 1 (kindergarten only)

  • Lilesville Elementary -- 9:00-11:00 a.m., April 23 (kindergarten only)

     Children must be registered in the school district in which they reside. To attend kindergarten, a child must be five years old on or before Aug. 31, 2010; to attend pre-K classes, a child must be four years old on or before Aug. 31, 2010.
     Documents and/or information needed for pre-school registration include: a certified birth certificate, shot record, Social Security card for the child, health assessment (if already completed), and at least two proofs of residence showing a 911 address.
